The first female chief of a penitentiary unit
The Mas d’Enric penitentiary centre opened in Catllar in 2015, bringing in inmates from the old Tarragona prison. That same year, Sub-inspector Carme Buqueras became the first female chief of a prison unit, taking command of the officers in charge of surveilling the prison’s exterior and transferring inmates.
Sub-inspector Buqueras (2nd cohort) was assigned to the Tarragona Regional Area until 1991. For the six years that followed she worked in the Public Health Department. When she was promoted to sergeant, she was assigned to the Inspection and Evaluation Department of the General Inspection Division, where she worked until 2004. Her first posting as a sub-inspector was as chief of the People Planning and Administration Department. Later, with her deployment to the Camp de Tarragona Police Region, she headed up the Regional Support Office until 2015. She was then appointed chief of the Catllar Penitentiary Unit, where she has remained until the present day.
